Tiger Shark Bytes

January 28, 2022

Hello Tiger Shark Families!

I hope this newsletter finds you well.  On Monday, students will receive their second quarter report card. This is a wonderful opportunity to sit down with your child and reflect on the quarter and to set goals for the third and fourth quarters.   Be sure to check your HCPSS Connect account on Monday afternoon for their report cards.  Hard copies will not be sent home.

Looking ahead to next school year, students need to make a selection for their fine arts and elective classes. The attached letters will help guide you and your child through the selection process for rising 7th and 8th grade fine arts and elective classes. We encourage you and your child to have a conversation and make selections based on strengths and interests to ensure a successful transition to 7th or 8th grade. Registration for these courses will be available online during the window of February 8, 2022 - February 22, 2022. Please reach out to the Student Services office at 410-313-6960, with any questions.

Changes to the HCPSS Calendar for 2021/2022

To date, HCPSS has used four of five days allocated in this year’s calendar as inclement weather make-up days. In anticipation of possible future inclement weather days, and in response to the declaration of June 19 as a federal holiday, at its Jan. 27 meeting, the Howard County Board of Education approved several modifications to the 2021-2022 current school year academic calendar:

·  Monday, Feb. 21, previously closed for Presidents Day, now will be a full school day, with both schools and offices being open. Earlier this week Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Mohammed Choudhury announced that districts may request permission and use the state-mandated closure on Presidents Day for an inclement weather make-up.

·  Monday, June 20, all HCPSS schools and offices will be closed in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. A bill signed by President Biden declared June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of African American slaves.

·  Wednesday, June 22 was added as an additional inclement weather day, if needed.

As in previous years, the last day of school will be communicated once winter weather is over and inclement weather days have been used. The HCPSS calendar is updated online.

Weather Related Status Codes

This past week is a prime example of the impact of weather on our school schedule.

The Howard County Public School System operates under five different codes. Normal operations are "Code Green." When schools are affected by weather, status codes are announced by 5:30 a.m.

HCPSS operational color code options are:

  • Code Green – Normal Operations (in accordance with the HCPSS calendar)
  • Code Red – Schools and Offices Closed
  • Code Orange – Schools Closed; Offices Open with Liberal Leave in Effect
  • Code Blue – Schools Open Two Hours Late (reevaluation by 7:30 a.m. to possibly change the status code).
  • Code Yellow – Schools Dismiss Early

In times of emergencies/school closings, information will be shared with the community through the following:

  • HCPSS status website
  • HCPSS homepage
  • HCPSS Information Hotline – 410-313-6666
